Sall, Nico

Nico Sall werd geboren in 1982. Hij studeerde piano aan de Muziekacademie van het Gemeenschapsonderwijs in Gent, waar hij ook naar de kunsthumaniora ging. Later studeerde Sall compositie bij Lucien Posman aan het Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium van Gent. In 2006 behaalde hij zijn meestergraad compositie, met als examenwerk Perspectives v.I², een fractaalcompositie voor basklarinet en trombone. Deze compositie vloeide rechtstreeks voort uit de workshop Laboratoire d’écriture musicale, een initiatief met als doel de banden tussen uitvoerders en componisten te verstevigen en nieuwe vormen van schriftuur te ontwikkelen.
Aan de basis van Salls composities liggen dan ook meestal complexe mathematische en grafische constructies.

Nico Sall was born in 1982. He studied piano at the Music Academy in Ghent, where he also specialised in arts and humanities. Later Sall studied composition with Lucien Posman at the Royal Music Conservatory in Ghent. In 2006 he received his master’s degree in composition, with as his final project the piece Perspectives v.I_, a fractal composition for bass clarinet and trombone. This composition was a direct result of the workshop ‘Laboratoire d’écriture musicale’, an initiative with the aim of strengthening the ties between performers and composers, and developing new forms of notation. Sall’s compositions are usually based on complex mathematical and graphic constructions.
